Nutritional Myopathy in Ducklings
نویسندگان
چکیده
Ducklings fed on a diet of skimmed milk powder, casein, corn-starch, lard, cod liver oil, yeast, salts and paper pulp rapidly develop a disease characterized by extreme and progressive myasthenia, ending in death within a few days. Pathological changes are found in the skeletal muscles. These show widespread hyaline necrosis of fibers, with edema and cellular reaction. The brain and other parts of the central nervous system are not affected, and no significant alterations are found in other viscera or tissues. The creatine content of the muscles is reduced in proportion to the muscle injury. Controls on a natural food diet remain free from the disease.

Nutritional and hormonal regulation of the translatable levels of malic enzyme and albumin mRNAs in avian liver cells in vivo and in culture.
Relative synthesis of malic enzyme is stimulated 25-to 100-fold by feeding neonatal ducklings or by incubating embryonic chick hepatocytes in culture with triiodothyronine. Synthesis of the enzyme is almost completely blocked when fed birds are starved or when triiodothyronine-treated hepatocytes in culture are also treated with glucagon. Cytoplasmic poly(A)+ RNA was isolated from livers of int...
متن کاملIntestinal physiology and regulatory T cell response to immediate or delayed access to feed and water in Pekin ducklings.
This study investigated the effects of delayed access to feed and water on early duckling growth, selected aspects of intestinal physiology, and immune responses. Ducklings were assigned to one of 2 experimental groups. In one treatment group (referred to as the fed group), feed and water were provided beginning on d 0, and in the other treatment group (referred to as the withheld group), feed ...
متن کاملElectromyography in nutritional osteomalacic myopathy.
Electromyographic studies in 15 women with nutritional osteomalacia and proximal muscle weakness showed brief duration motor unit action potentials of normal amplitude and increased proportion of polyphasic motor unit potentials in the majority of them. By employing quantitative methods of electromyography, more positive results were obtained, thus reducing the sampling data. The histology show...
متن کاملThe Effect of Nutritional Status in the Pathogenesis of Critical Illness Myopathy (CIM)
The muscle wasting and loss of specific force associated with Critical Illness Myopathy (CIM) is, at least in part, due to a preferential loss of the molecular motor protein myosin. This acquired myopathy is common in critically ill immobilized and mechanically ventilated intensive care patients (ICU). There is a growing understanding of the mechanisms underlying CIM, but the role of nutritiona...
متن کاملNutritional Status and Body Composition in Korean Myopathy Patients.
In myopathy patients, fat mass increases as the disease progresses, while lean body mass decreases. The present study aimed to investigate the overall nutritional status of Korean myopathy patients through surveys of diet and dietary habits, bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and biochemistry tests, as well as the examination of related factors, for the purpose of using such findings as a ...
